Artist's Comments

At long last, this is done. I took a lot longer on this one because there wasn't any good refs for the pose, lighting, colour etc so it was all quite against me from the start. Plus, I had to extensively tweak the background to get the mood I wanted.

I was inspired by the mood of these series of amazing cosplay pictures: [link]

It was fun adding the snow. I used this tutorial to help me: [link]

I cropped the picture again after painting in the character because the statue was too distracting. The original photo is here: [link]

Painting the scarf took forever to make it look right. I tried to equalize the colours at the end but it didn't look nice at all. Thanks for the tip though, :icontravesty-of-life:. :)

And just a quick note, that building is NOT the Kremlin, but a famous Russian Orthodox cathedral called St. Basil's. Most people, like me think that it's the Kremlin! The real one is just further along the Red Square.

[EDIT] Changed some of the snow after consulting :iconaiori:. I think it looks better now and more calm, which is what I wanted it to be.

Wow- You know I'm really impressed! Just- Ivan's expression and everything, and the snow.
Just a tip though- it doesn't always snow in Russia and it's really not always cold at all XD
Love it! Faved! It'd be nice if you could do a tutorial on the painting though- I really like your technique but can't figure out how you get that brushstroke and yet not brushstroke feel.

Yes, I know it doesn't always snow in Russia. Most of the photos I found of St. Basil's are of summertime (which is really frustrating when you want a nice wintry scene). XP

The "brushstroke" effect you see is a result of the program I use, Paint Tool SAI which comes built in with nice textures and brushes so that every stroke I lay down has all that built in. It's also really nice to do skin with and not get a super smooth shiny effect that looks a bit false, especially since I"m trying to blend a painted person with a photo background.

Yes, I suppose I must do a tutorial soon. I've been meaning to do one for awhile, but I don't really consider myself an expert enough to make a definitive one. Besides, my style tends to change really quickly as I move through projects. XP

Wow! It's very beautiful pic and really Ivan.

I know what you mean, mmm. I use painter which is similar in some respects but U always end up with something that's too.... smooth-looking and rather false.
But really, in all honesty I would totally give a limb for a tutorial haha.
And Moscow in summertime is lovely :aww:

Hetalia + realism= win win win win win win.

here's some internets for you! *hands internets*

just everything is so pretty here. The snow, his expression, the scarf. It seems like a little thing, but I really, really, really like the color of that scarf. XD

I started by painting with Painter Classic, then Paint Shop Pro, Open Canvas then SAI. SAI is nice because it immediately makes the strokes interact with the canvas which is different from laying a texture over later.

I might just use this picture to make a tutorial or the Japan one.

I want to go to Moscow! T_T

The scarf was originally a pale pink. I changed it to red because it seems to fit his communist ideology better.

Wow, this turned out incredibly! I love the addition of snow, it seems well placed. He matches the bg well...not to mention, he looks really good, too =D
